Reasons to be Creative – My Relationship With Writing

I’m often asked why I got into creative writing. After all, to head off to university to study, following a successful 34-year career in IT, the juxtaposition is curious. To answer this, I take people back to my first memory of being hooked on what I considered a large tome, Watership Down by Richard Adams. I remember sitting down in a quiet corner at every opportunity to continue my journey alongside the rabbits Hazel, Fiver and Bigwig. Even though I was a weedy child, I considered myself having the wily instinctual aspects of Fiver and the leadership potential of Hazel. At that young age, I had no idea about the anthropomorphism within the novel (let alone being able to spell it), yet I use these elements in my writing today. Little did I know then, but it gave me a lifetime of interest in stories and storytelling.

During my life, my reading habits have become quite eclectic, and this has equally had an influence on the breadth of my writing.  Authors such as Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Douglas Adams, Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Lee Child, to name a few, have all had an impact and shaped my style. I do not prescribe to any writing process or method as I can swing from day to day between pantsing (writing by the seat of my pants) to plotting. Often, I’ll spin up a new idea completely out of the blue but will find myself at some point ‘losing the plot’ (excuse the pun) hence, navigating a way forward by switching to plotting.

While my primary focus has been my career, during my downtime I’ve increasingly put pen to paper, or preferably, fingers to keyboard. I often describe my handwriting as atrocious, and my mother still says to this day that I should have been a doctor with handwriting like that. A couple of years ago, I came across an old report card from secondary school where my English teacher had written, “Trevor tries hard and has made a real effort to improve his handwriting”. Ironically, it took me four or five attempts to decipher her scrawl.

This is the primary reason I use technology for most of my creative writing. That, and my extensive IT career, which has embedded technology securely in my psyche. I use a mixture of tools such as Microsoft Office, Scrivener (for larger, more complex novel constructions), Evernote (replacing notepads and my handwriting), Dropbox and cloud storage to replicate and save backups. The other platform I use profusely is Google Chrome for research, however, that is the proverbial double-edged sword. On the one hand, almost everything you need, can be located on the internet if you look hard enough. On the other, a global search engine is probably the worst tool which enables procrastination. Recently, I was researching details on hedgehog highway creations for a script. After 5 minutes had passed, I found myself looking at pages upon pages of humorous hedgehog memes.

Before attending university, I had attempted some poetry, non-fiction and fictional writing, but my views of poetry and poets were that of woolly headed hippies. Likewise, I thought scriptwriters were a bunch of intellectual luvvies and non-fiction writers were dull as dishwater stuffy academics. I now have a fascination with how each of these crafts overlap one another in what could be described as a large Venn diagram. For instance, poetry can teach you concision, fictional writing teaches you narrative structures and plotting, scriptwriting teaches you character development and journeys, while scholarship or non-fictional writing teaches you about influences and approaches to your reading and subsequent writing.

During my career, I had deadlines set by pushy executives or clients. I found that when attending university, the continual flow of deadlines per module has aided my progression and forced me to write, regardless of how I feel. Several authors have posted that to be a writer you must write every day, almost religiously. I recently read Stephen King’s writing memoir, ‘On Writing’ and in there he states that he does set himself deadlines of circa 2000 words per day. However, he goes on to say that he still finds time each day to do leisurely activities such as family, games and seeing the Red Sox baseball team. In emulation, I am attempting to set my own deadlines in terms of word count per day, regardless of whether I have deliveries for publication or university module entries. This way, I hope to force a continual evolution and output to my writing and, to a comment I made in my university application, become a prolifically published author.

Update (2018)

The last update(s) on this site was in 2009 when I was 42.  I have, since then:

  • Turned 52 🙂
  • Planning for early retirement
  • Moved through quite a few transitions work-wise (Since Wipro … Cisco, CGI/Logica, Capita, Enterprise Blueprints, Experian)
  • Sorting out my next stage of career and/or Life (I’m currently working within Experian) … As an extra-curricular activity and as part of my future plans been undertaking courses in creative writing and I’m planning on potentially going to university to develop the my ability at the craft

Whilst the format of these pages leaves a lot to be desired I am going to endeavour to update with some of my writings/ramblings as we go on (if you’ll forgive the pun) … The next chapter in my life 🙂

Online living

For a while now I’ve been toying with the idea of mapping out the landscape of the on-line world I live in i.e. if you look at the ever growing technological world around you and the continuing influences on our lives, I seem to have identities or linkages to a plethora of systems across the world. I’d started this mapping exercise to make sense of some of the linkages I had and to ensure that I hadn’t created any infinite data loops whereby I post something in one location which is replicated in form to another, then another and then back to where I started causing the whole process to repeat … though I must admit that part of me (my mischievous side) thought it might be quite fun to see how bad it could get 😉

The following is a map of some of the core systems I use today and whilst it does not cover all of my world (both inside work and around my life) it shows just how these things start to snowball out of control if you let them. It also helped me start to think about ‘how’ I wanted to use the systems I use today, some of which aren’t shown here as it enabled me to see the whole picture in terms of ‘Entry Points’ for data, ‘Data Replication’, ‘Readership’ and ‘Ease of Use’. When I have more time I’ll map this out further and may even shrink it to a handful of services which become key to my ‘Online Living’:

Online Living

As you can see by this view, it would be easy for the technology around us to become so invasive that it does indeed become ‘Our World’ and I have no doubt that with further enhancements over the coming years it will become even more so. In fact if you follow Moores Law we’ll be knee deep in this ‘Stuff’ before you know it 😀

In the meantime, I will head out into the sunshine and escape from this ‘Online Living’ … at least for a little while!!

Social Networking, Long lost friends and Emigration

Over the last year or so I’ve managed to get back in touch with numerous friends, colleagues and relatives I’d lost touch with … Some of which I haven’t seen in nearly 30 years – All of this through the ever expanding social network services the internet provides.

It’s interesting to note how far and wide people have spread yet they’re only a mouse click or phone call away … some as close as across county borders in the UK whilst some are as far away as the US, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand and Canada. Even now other friends are planning moves away from the UK and I must admit the draw to do likewise is getting stronger. With that said, it’s also interesting to note that a number of people have remained in and around their original hometowns … even I didn’t move away from Loughborough until I was in my thirties!!

For those that emigrate, is it the draw of an exciting new life, employment, sunnier climates, following other family & friends or simply looking for the greener grass? Who’s to say? Everyone has their different ideal lifestyles or work/life requirements which may differ from year to year as situations change. The same can be asked of those who stay in and around their original place of birth. Is it a comfort factor? Is it to remain within a strong localised family group? Is it the location of the most suitable work/employer?

Would I emigrate? Probably … given half the chance, however, there are numerous factors which must be taken into account … Schooling for the kids, Employment, Heart-string strains from moving beyond a short walk or car drive to see family, uncertainty of what awaits and even then … Where to? There’re loads of places I’ve seen on TV/Etc but until you’ve visited a place you can’t really get a good feel for the nuances and even then it is a peripheral view at best. I have travelled to numerous places around the world with my job but emigration is a family decision so wouldn’t want to dictate location/direction without the whole family deciding. You can’t visit everywhere in the world before deciding as you’d be still travelling when it’s your time to pop your clogs. I’m always interested to know why people who have taken the emigration plunge chose their particular location and would welcome further thoughts or insights.

To live the life

An old friend of mine took early retirement from BT last year and decided to take a 2 year ‘adventure’ sailing around the world with a mate of his. He’s coming up for around the half way mark in terms of time and distance and they’re keeping daily/weekly blog updates. All I can say is ‘Good on you Pete’. I must say the blogging and in particular the photographs they’re taking make me extremely jealous yet hopeful for the future as it just goes to prove you can’t keep a good man down and there is indeed life out there … you just need to grab hold and go for it. Bon voyage Pete.

Law of Attraction

I recently saw an article written about the Law of Attraction.  There are a few variations on this particular topic but this one was specifically along the lines of: “whatever we think about the most is what we attract into our lives” for example, if you think of yourself as a rich person, you will attract riches to you, if you are depressed you will attract more depression, etc.

It is quite an enveloping topic and as such I agree with the originator that his post could not cover everything about it but merely raise it for discussion as covering it in detail would fill a whole book.  In saying that I think there were a few points made in his blog and the follow up comments which deserved further analysis or discussion.

One of the points made was that we move our lives toward the things we think about or put another way, we can become a magnet for success, just by altering your attitude.  Now, whilst I accept both these statements, if they are read out of context they become almost mystical in nature and people are more likely to dismiss the concept out-right, however, what we’re actually talking about here is a “mindset”…

Throughout everyone’s lives we make decisions in life much like a fork in the road.  Each decision may come to us by luck, by others belief in you, by accidents/incidents or even via challenges or opportunities presented to you.  In order for you to decide the direction you’ll take, your “mindset” governs the decision making process.  What I mean by that is that, for starters, if you have a specific nature for example you’re an introvert, you’re adventurous, or even reckless this is but 1 factor in the decision making process.  Your “mindset” at a particular time has been shaped by the world around you and your experiences in it.  You may have made some ill mannered decisions in the past, you may have ultimate belief in yourself to achieve anything or you may even have experienced a painful death of someone close leading you to reconsider your life and the risks you’d be willing to take.  Each nuance of your life has an effect on the “mindset”.  The argument for the Law of Attraction is that if you believe and therefore visualise a specific goal, you will achieve it!!!  Again, this is simply 1 factor and all of life’s experiences MUST be taken into account.  Don’t get me wrong, I am not dismissive of the ‘believe and you will achieve’ point of view as it is an important factor … your belief in yourself will colour your decisions.

As I examine my life and those of my friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances around me I see a multitude of career paths, personal lives and aspirations.  Each trodden path has been taken using a infinite number or parameters taken from the world and their experiences … Just because someone has started out life with a good education and happy family life doesn’t mean this equates to success in later life, whereas another person may have left school with little or no education yet has a better paid job than the first.  Why the difference?  You could put it down to having a ‘positive attitude’ or ‘ultimate self belief’ but I am more inclined to believe that it’s this plus choices which have been made/driven as challenges and opportunities have been presented and by luck or by judgement the more successful path has been chosen.

There is another factor that has not been discussed but I believe is an important point.  Success to one person is very likely to be totally different from success for another yet both are tangible.  Whether the point of success was originally perceived in their “mindset” or not is neither here nor there.  Success is ‘subjective’ and where one person may see their lives as not being as successful as others and are striving for something even greater, they may actually already seem successful to all around them.

Leisure

I’ve added one of my favourite pictures I took of Rydal Water in the UK Lake District.  It’s a stitch which expands beyond what you see in the clipped image here.  I always feel at peace when I see this and, although I’m not a fan of poetry the Poem ‘Leisure’ always springs to mind:

“LEISURE”

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Update (2009)

Well, a number of things have changed …

While I’ve been sorting out my next stage of career (which is now settled as I begin with Wipro Technologies on 16th November), I’ve also been trying to align my social network links into some sort of order which 1) align with each other, 2) have active links if available (which are currently being tested) and 3) have been subsidised by additional services such as Flickr, Digg and Google Reader.

I’ve also been altering the look and feel of this site to ensure I’m happy with content and presentation though I don’t think I’m there yet.
